Oracle 10g Avoiding Disruption
In this chapter, we will highlight the new
features and enhancements related to Oracle Database high
availability and scalability. The facilities and features that help
to achieve higher availability and scalability of the database,
avoiding disruptions will especially be emphasized.
Traditionally, the Oracle Database has been
very involved in providing a variety of high availability features.
The same pattern is visible in enhancing and adding the new features
in Oracle Database 10g. The main areas of high availability
enhancements are:
Online Redefinition – Without disrupting
the usual database operations, table structure or definition can be
modified. New procedures are added to the dbms_redefinition package.
Support for tables with additional data types has been extended.
Log Miner Enhancements – LogMiner
provides a mechanism to extract all SQL statements from the redo and
archived log files. Enhancements include automatic determination of
the redo log files needed for a logminer session, and support for
additional data types and objects.
Synonyms – Automatic Validation of
dependent PL/SQL program units is introduced.
Real Application Clusters – Many
improvements are added in this release. The main additions and
changes include the concept of Service for better work load
management, cluster ready services (portable clusterware), improved
tools such as DBCA, SRVCTL, DBUA, and OEM, improved streams support,
and limited rolling upgrade possibility.
Data Guard – The main improvements
include real time apply, the simplified zero data loss for data
guard SQL apply method, named data guard configurations, secured
redo transmission, using the standby redo log files and support for
additional data types and objects.
Supplemental Logging – Fine Grained
supplemental logging.
Database Flashback – Restore to a
previous point in time instead of point-in-time recovery if errors
are polluting the database system. Table Flashback quickly
re-establishes a table from the past, using the new recyclebin
structures. A detailed account of database flashback is presented in
Chapter 12.
