Oracle 10g Data Guard Environment
Oracle Data Guard is one of the very popular
options available to database administrators for setting up disaster
recovery of a database or an alternate database for secondary uses.
With the dual option of physical standby and logical standby
databases, administrators have more choices in setting up near-real
time synchronized secondary databases.
Oracle Database 10g goes further in enhancing
the data guard database environment. In this section we will examine
the new features that expand data guard capabilities and improve
ease of use.
Overview of New Features
The improvements include the introduction of
‘real time apply’, enabling of redo encryption, integrity
sum-checking and authentication, specifying role-based destinations,
setting service provider's name, automatic and remote archiving, and
better support for a RAC environment.
New features for Logical Standby include the
simplified creation of a logical standby database with a logical
standby control file, support for standby redo log files for logical
standby databases, support for additional data types, IOT, and
tables with unused columns, and an improved command set. There are
also some new columns added to certain dba views to enhance
diagnosis and trouble shooting capability.
In the case of the data guard broker, the
configuration model has been simplified. Many commands in the DGMGRL
have been improved. Data Guard Manager, which is a part of the
enterprise manager, has a new interface and a new look. It extends
support for Oracle RAC environments also.
We will examine these features next.
