This pages includes author tips for prospective authors of computer books.

How do I research the potential sales for my book?

Many authors want to know how well that their book is selling and to analyze the sales of their competition.  While we cannot get access to sales of competitors books (unless they ship 3rd class mail, where we can get a US Post office report), we need at tool to track sales.

Most professional authors track:

  • The sales of their book

  • The sales of competing books

  • Analyze book reviews to determine the strengths and weakness of the books

There are several great tools for measuring book sales:

What are people saying about computer books?

I recommend that everyone look for book review for both your book and your competition at least once a month.

Of course, all the web sites are subject to "planted" reviewed, usually by proud grandparents and family, so they should be taken as non-scientific, invalid comments.

I use these main sites, and carefully read the review, seeking to identify strengths and weaknesses:

1 – Amazon -            www.amazon.com

2 – Barnes & Noble – www.barnesandnoble.com

You must also be very careful not to alienate your fellow authors and competing publishers.
